Editor’s note: This event has been cancelled for 2020 due to public-health concerns. Organizers still plan to move forward with their event in 2021.

Ever since we learned that Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson and his longtime business partner Dany Garcia were starting their own bodybuilding and fitness summit, the question has been: What, exactly, is Athleticon going to be?

Would it be Atlanta's version of a show-and-expo like the Olympia Weekend in Las Vegas? A everything-but-the-kitchen-sink carnival of competition like the Arnold Sports Festival in Columbus, Ohio? Or, given that it is the brainchild of two consummate creators like Garcia and Johnson, would it be something else entirely?

Increasingly, it appears that Athleticon, taking place October 10 and 11, 2020, will be its own animal. On February 12, Johnson and Garcia announced the first slate of programming for Athleticon, as well as a trailer for the event.

Athleticon showcases a blend of competition, education, and entertainment events that are unique among fitness festivals. Along with more traditional fitness-focused components, the release says, it will feature educational seminars, group fitness experiences, and a large-scale musical performance. Here's what we know:

Physique competitions: Athleticon will feature its own IFBB Pro League competition, the ICON world classic, as well as an NPC competition, the NPC Worldwide International Championship. Both are intended to be international rather than national championships.

Sports: Athleticon will also host an immense 3-on-3 basketball championship featuring over 60 teams on four half-courts. The teams will span multiple age groups, and include an under 18 division. Additional competitive athletic events may be forthcoming.

Wellness: Specialists in yoga, dance, meditation, and strength training will stage large-scale "immersive experiences" and group classes across the two days of Athleticon.

Education: AthletiConference will feature educational panels, "fireside chats," and collaborative events with experts.

Entertainment: The Athleticon Festival, on Saturday night, will feature a four-hour concert program on a massive outdoor stage. Throughout the weekend, the UFC Fan Experience will feature fighters, interactive displays, and photo opportunities.

This is just the first wave of event info, and the Athleticon website promises more details in the months to come. Learn more at Athleticon.com, or by following Athleticon on social media.
